KOREA BULL FIGHTING FESTIVAL
Every March, Cheongdo holds the annual Korea Bull Fighting Festival, better known as the Cheongdo bull fighting festival from within Korea. Korean bull fighting involves two bulls pushing each other, pushing head to head, and is thus completely different from Spanish and Latin American bullfighting. Bull fighting has been said to begin as a pastime for farmers during the agricultural off-season. It is also told that it is 1000-year-old tradition, with its roots in the territorial fights that establish grazing rights between the bulls, and of course the farmers owning those bulls. In 1999, it was developed into an official tourist festival in Cheongdo, attracting international interest. There's a domestic competition and also an international tournament with bulls from Japan, USA and Australia. You will be able to watch heated matches between fighting bulls at the Bull Fight Arena between March 17 and 21 this year.
Cheongdo is located about 40 kilometers south of Daegu. You may travel there from any major city within Korea. Since 1999, theyve hosted an annual bullfighting festival to restore a traditional pastime while creating a tourism draw. A 10,000 person-capacity stadium was erected for this purpose, and hundreds of bulls fight annually for a prize of several million won, or a few thousand U.S. dollars.
