KOREA HIKING
If you have never tried hiking up a mountain, it can be quite invigorating, hard work and also a relaxing experience.
Taking your time and enjoying the scenery can be relaxing, especially when you arrive at the top to take in the view or visit a
Buddhist Temple.
My first hiking experience in Korea, was at Gyeongju. The hike was fairly steep, but short, approximately 45 minutes to the top.
The scenery, especially in fall, is quite majestic, made up of stretching miles of rolling green or fall coloured trees. Stopping to rest several times, take in the view, breathe in the mountain air, all adds to the experience making it more enjoyable. It is difficult. There are mountain hikes, such as Beomasa (LINK0? that are not as steep and perhaps much more enjoyable for many.
At the top I was able to take in a wide spread view of the many surrounding mountains.
It is interesting to actually go hiking within a city and look down upon an area below. The cities in Korea are built mostly around mountains,
as the landscape is made up of approximately 70-75% mountains.
After a nice, short or long hike, it is always nice to visit a bath house, seen at the bottom the
Korean Culture page. There are many hiking groups in Korea. A group of people basically getting together on certain weekends, usually renting a bus for a trip top some mountain, or local mountain. On some occasions I had gone on a three hour bus trip, hiked several hours and then a long trip back, traffic jam freeway slowing us up. However, the entertainment can be fun, if you enjoy singing Karaoke and drinking, while barrelling down the freeway.
One of my favourites is a small mountain in Onchangjang Dong, in Busan, red subway stop 127. This fairly steep hike can be short, or long if you continue on different trails once on top. There are several peaks to reach, an old fortress and cable car, as well as temple. It is very close to one of the largest bath houses in Korea, perhaps the world, called Hirshimchun. This is located not far from the subway.
