BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor's degree of any field or higher
2. Passport from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, or the USA
3. English must be your first language
4. Educated in English from at least middle school
5. Enthusiasm about teaching
6. Teaching experience is preferred. If you have teaching experience, you will be offered better salary and benefits in most schools.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Though most schools and recruiters will except the above requirements, other qualifications will ensure you more job choices and usually better salary, depending on the school. For example, public schools in Korea will hire teachers with basic qualifications. For other qualifications (as listed below) a salary increase is granted. You will also have a better chance of being hired in a public school with more qualifications, and especially Universities in Korea and other counties, like Japan.

For University teachers with minimum education requirements, 5 years teaching experience in public schools or equivalent is usually needed. A masters degree will help you greatly, and usually you will still need 1-2 years teaching experience. It should be noted that most Universities, especially in Korea, view Hagwan teaching experience as half-time. In other words 2 years at a Hagwan is equal to 1 year of public school. If you teach at adult schools it is most likely viewed as equal to a public school in the view point of a University in Korea. Other qualifications are as follows and apply to most or all teaching positions in any country.

1. TESOL: A TESOL course is considered important. However, it is still not part of the basic requirements. You do not need it, but many schools and especially parents of private school students will look at a tesol as an excellent qualification. 2. CELTA: Considered even better than a TESOL and more intense, this course usually takes one month and is geared for teaching mostly adults. Though if being hired to teach young students, a celta will certainly help.
3. A University degree in English will certainly look good when getting hired. You will have a better grasp of the language, especially with grammar.
4. A bachelor of education is excellent and puts you in a better qualification bracket.
5. A masters degree in any field is considered excellent and puts you in a higher qualification bracket. This is looked on very highly by schools and especially helps with getting hired at a University.
6. A masters degree in a related field, such as English, Linguistics or TESOL is even better.
7. A Phd: This needs little explanation. If you are coming overseas to teach ESL and hold a Phd, you should be getting some of the best University positions and a higher salary. Again, related fields help, but not needed for ESL.
8. Schools like experience. It shows you are probably reliable and can teach well. If your experience is overseas, it shows you will finish your contract(s) and can live abroad.

For teaching other subjects such as math or science, a bachelor of education is needed or Phd for University level in most cases.
